Miles J Dean is a visionary who lives by his horseman creed... When you give your word, keep it... When you find your path in life stay on the trail. When you learn your history, teach the children because they deserve to know. Miles has been an avid horseman for more than 25 years. He has competed in endurance, trail, and speed events. Miles is also a classroom teacher, beginning his teaching career in 1984. He holds several certifications and accreditations in the teaching profession. In his 30 years of mentoring youth in group home settings, classroom instruction, athletic coaching, creative performances, and as a 4-H leader in horsemanship skills, he has had major impact on both adults and children. Miles is also the co-founder and executive director of the Black Heritage Riders Inc. As A Modern African American Pioneer (AMAAP), he completed an historic 5,000 mile journey from New York City to Los Angeles, on horseback in 2008. His journey launched the Black Heritage Riders’ educational initiatives: through his website that chronicled his journey, viewers learned about the contributions of African Americans to the expansion and development of the United States. His commitment to educating youth about the accomplishments of African Americans in history continues with the National Day of the Black Jockey Celebration. |
